Two trains cross each other in 14 seconds when running in opposite directions along parallel tracks. The faster train is 160 m long and crosses a lamp post in 12 seconds. If the speed of the other train is 6 km/hr less than the faster one, its length, in m, is

Explanation

 Let speed of faster train be V1 and of the other train beV2 m/s.

         Then V1160 over 12  = 40 over 3  m/s

         The speed of the other train is 6 km/hr = 6 x 5 over 18 = 5 over 3 m/s less than the speed of faster train         So, V2 = 40 over 3  - 5 over 3  = 35 over 3   m/s       

Relative speed when trains run in opposite direction = V1 + V2  =75 over 3 = 25 m/s         Distance moved in 14 s = 14 x 25 = 350 m

         This distance is the sum of lengths of two trains. So, faster train being 160 m long

         length of other train = 350 – 160 = 190 m
