A basket of 2 apples, 4 oranges and 6 mangoes costs the same as a basket of 1 apple, 4 oranges and 8 mangoes, or a basket of 8 oranges and 7 mangoes. Then the number of mangoes in a basket of mangoes that has the same cost as the other baskets is
12
13
11
10
Explanation
Let the price of 1 apple, 1 orange, and 1 mango is , B, and C respectively. Then
2 A + 4 O + 6 M = A + 4 O + 8 M
=> 2 A + 4 O + 6 M = A + 4 O + 8 M
=> A = 2 M ………(1)
Again, A + 4 O + 8 M = 8 O + 7 M
Substituting for A,
2 M + 4 O + 8 M = 8 O + 7 M
=> 4 O = 3 M ……….(2)
Substituting for A and O in cost of third basket, we have
Cost of a basket = 8 O + 7 M = 2 x 3M + 7 M = 13 M
Hence, mangoes in a basket of mangoes that has the same cost as the other baskets number 13.
