Explanation

If each side of hexagon measures  cm, its area = 6 cross times fraction numerator square root of 3 over denominator 4 end fraction space a squared        ….(1)

         Area of equilateral triangle of side 12 cm =  fraction numerator square root of 3 over denominator 4 end fraction space 12 squared                     …..(2)

         Equating (1) and (2),

         6 cross times space fraction numerator square root of 3 over denominator 4 end fraction space a squared  =  fraction numerator square root of 3 over denominator 4 end fraction space 12 squared

=>    a squared= 12 squared over 6  = 2√6
