8).

Onion is sold for 5 consecutive months at the rate of Rs. 10, 20, 25, 25, and 50 per kg, respectively. A family spends a fixed amount of money on onion for each of the first three months, and then spends half that amount on onion for each of the next two months. The averageexpense for onion, in rupees per kg, for the family over these 5 months is closest to

  1. 18

  2. 26

  3. 16

  4. 20

Explanation

Let amount of money spent for each of the first three months = 100 rupees, and for each of the next two months = 50 rupees

Total amount of money spent over these 5 months = 400 rupees

Kg of onion purchased over the 5 months =  100 over 10 plus 100 over 20 plus 100 over 25 plus 50 over 25 plus 50 over 50

                                                                            = 10 + 5 + 4 +2 + 1 = 22

Average expense over the 5 months in rupees per kg = 400/22 =18 kg approximately.
