  open vertical bar x squared minus 4 x minus 13 close vertical bar space equals space r          

         => open vertical bar x squared minus 4 x plus 4 minus 17 close vertical bar equals r

         => open vertical bar open parentheses x minus 2 close parentheses squared minus 17 close vertical bar = r

         =>  open parentheses x minus 2 close parentheses squared minus 17= r   or  open parentheses x minus 2 close parentheses squared minus 17  = -  r  

         =>  open parentheses x minus 2 close parentheses squared= 17 + r    or    open parentheses x minus 2 close parentheses squared = 17 - r   

Each of these two equations has two roots. But if r = 17, the second equation has one root only or overall, exactly three distinct real roots.
